Shore & Jetty Dives
| Port Noarlunga Aquatic Reserve Location: 25km south of Adelaide Rating: Novice Click For Map With over 200 species of marine plants and animals, over 73 types of fish, bryozoans, sponges, hydroids, ascidians and molluscs, this is an excellent dive for novice divers. Caution should be taken, as there is a strong current when high and low tides have a difference of more than one metre, so check tides carefully. Port Noarlunga Aquatic Trail with 12 markers starts next to seaward end of the jetty and travels south along inside of reef through the gap and then north along the outside of the reef. | |
Rapid Bay - Rapid Bay Jetty Location: 95km south of Adelaide Rating: Novice plus great snorkeling Click For Map Enter from the new dive platform of the smaller jetty. Swim over to the old jetty, which is 470m long with a 200m T-section. Expect large schools of fish in and around the structure and you are almost guaranteed to see Leafy Sea Dragons. Once described by marine biologist Reg Lipson as the best jetty dives in Australia. An enjoyable dive and well worth the visit. | |
Second Valley Location: 90km south of Adelaide Rating: Novice plus great snorkeling Click For Map A small bay with an excellent jetty, ideal for snorkeling and diving but is very popular with fisherman, so be cautious of fishing lines. A rocky reef system runs along the shore line providing shelter for a large variety of marine creatures including the Leafy Seadragon. A great training site with easy access from the carpark and an excellent take away shop nearby, this makes Second Valley a pleasant dive site for all levels of diver. Maximum depth 6m. | |
Lasseter's Reef - Second Valley Location: 90km south of Adelaide Rating: Novice to Advanced Click For Map Enter off the beach at Second Valley, head north from the centre of the beach for approx 300m. It is a 50m-diameter dome shaped reef. The reef hosts a wide range of residents including the illusive Leafy Sea Dragon. The site is very exposed and not diveable in a big swell. Other shore dives in the area are behind the boat sheds and some small caves west of the sheds. The jetty is used extensively as an open water training site. | |
The Bluff - Victor Harbour Location: 1 hour south of Adelaide of Adelaide Rating: Novice to Advanced Click For Map The bluff is 5km west of the town centre of Victor Harbour. Entrance from small jetty near the Bluff, be aware that it is quite shallow so do not attempt a giant stride from the top! Expect a enormous variety of fish, crayfish, cuttlefish, seals and weedy sea dragons. Caution, there can be tricky currents even on calm days and large waves can appear out of nowhere. Depth ranges from 4m to 40m. | |
Blowhole Creek - Deep Creek Location: 90 Min South of Adelaide Rating: Advanced and you need to be reasonably fit. Click For Map This site is in Deep Creek Conservation Park 80kms south of Adelaide and is only accessible by four-wheel drive. You need to follow the signs through the park down the dirt road to the car park. Four wheel drive only from car park down a very steep track to the end. Follow the steep path several hundred metres to a\small beach. Entry is anywhere from the beach to this beautiful un-spoilt sight. It is teeming with life, crayfish galore, seals and sea dragons. You do have to watch for heavy current and freak waves and it is strongly advised you dive with someone who knows the area - at least first. |
